| Two Thumbs down for Vicky leaving again! |
Oh, Toronto. You are the new New Zealand.
Back in the mid 2000's New Zealand was stealing all of my friends. I couldn't quite understand WHY, as New Zealand looks EXACTLY LIKE BC. I mean, if you're going to move somewhere, why pick a place that resembles the place you left? GEEZ.
Maybe that is just bitterness talking, because I, for a while, lost two of my best friends to the lure of the NZ, while I refused to visit, choosing to spend my money to take me to places where no one speaks my language and the buildings are older than my country.
But they came back. Oh, they came back. The pull of our little island home is too big to ignore for too long. And we got to enter our early 30's together, and all was well.
But now? NOW, someone (ahem, Vicky) has decided that Toronto is the place for her. The cool new job (I mean it DOES sound seriously cool), the cool new apartment in a hip part of downtown Toronto, the cool new roommate, the cooooooooool new city.
I'm happy for her. But I count the years until VT returns. Maybe she won't. Toronto has things that we don't. Such as, opportunities for promotion. I could move to Toronto with my company, because that is where the opportunities lay, but I chose to stay here, because this IS where my heart is. Toronto is a fun place to visit, but I don't think I could ever get totally down with it. But I get needing to leave. I get that when your friends all start getting married and having babies that you can go where the opportunities present themselves. And why wouldn't you? It would be foolish not to.
So, until Vicky, Jon & Stef decide to come back to Victoria, I will mildly resent Toronto and all of it's alluring promise. But I will visit when I can because I DO enjoy a good city visit (just as long as I can get back to the Island), where I can visit Burger's Priest, shop at Anthropologie, check out all the hot bodies at the Beaches, and see the wonderful people I wish lived closer to me.
Good luck in Toronto, Vicky!!! We will miss you muchly.
